DV - Digital Video, is a recording format created by Sony, JVC, Panasonic and other video camera producers, and
launched in 1995. Its smaller tape  form factor MiniDV has since become a standard for home and semi-professional video production, and is also used for many professional video recording purposes.
DV tapes and MiniDV Cassettes:
DV uses 1/4" (6.35mm) metal evaporated tape and comes in two cassette formats: standard full-size DV cassette tapes (125x78x14.6mm) that hold three hours of video and one-hour MiniDV cassettes (66x48x12mm). The small MiniDV cassette tapes greatly enabled camcorders to shrink to handheld proportions.
DVC PRO is a professional variant of the DV tape by Panasonic. The major difference is doubled tape speed, which is needed for better drop-out tolerance and general recording robustness.
Can I Erase DV, MiniDV and DVC-Pro tape?
Yes, and erased DV tapes can be re-used.
The quality of future recordings on the tape are improved, removes the need for 'blanking' DV tapes using the camcorder which puts unnecessary wear and tear on the recording heads.
How do I erase DV tape and MiniDV ?
Using a DV eraser or degausser is considerably quicker and efficient. Less than 10 seconds to full erase a DV tape cassette
