VHS or Video Home System is a video tape recording standard initially developed in the 1970's. No longer used by film studios as the format for move releases etc, replaced in 2006 by DVD. A VHS video cassette holds a maximum of about 430m of tape at the lowest acceptable tape thickness, giving a maximum playing time of approx 3.5 hours for NTSC and 5 hours for PAL at "standard" (SP) quality. Other speeds include LP and EP/SLP which double and triple the recording time, for NTSC regions. However these other speeds could result in lesser quality playback.
VHS video variations include:
Super-VHS / Digital-VHS (high definition) / ADAT: This is an analog video standard with improved video bandwidth. S-VHS made little impact on the home market but was widely used within the camcorder market due to its superior picture quality.
VHS-C / Super-VHS-C: VHS-C or VHS Compact was developed for portable VCR machines but became more widely used in palm-sized camcorders. Sony Betamax could not be reduced in size so instead Video/Hi8 was developed as direct competition for VHS-C, though neither has become the dominant camcorder video tape format.
Can I Erase VHS Video tape?
